The European Commission (EC) has ordered two entities, including the Single European Sky ATM Research  (SESAR) Deployment Manager (SESAR DM) and SESAR Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU), to review the current status of the pilot common project (PCP) to modernise European air traffic management.

The PCP is an EC regulation governing the synchronised deployment of the first set of SESAR solutions, in full accordance with the SESAR Deployment Programme.

It has already identified six air traffic management (ATM) functionalities, which are expected to be deployed across the EC nations.

The functionalities include extended arrival management and performance-based navigation in high-density terminal manoeuvring areas, airport integration and throughput, and flexible airspace management.

As part of the latest EC mandate, both SESAR DM and SESAR JU will work together to ensure a logical and consistent evolution in the synchronised deployment of SESAR solutions.

Both reviews are expected to be delivered to the EC in late 2017.

In its review, SESAR DM will propose minimum changes to facilitate quick implementation and potentially earlier and increased performance benefits under PCP.

"The SESAR DM will fulfil these tasks with a high level of competence and commitment, ensuring not only the full implementation of the revised PCP, but also paving the way for the second common project."

It will also maintain a buy-in through a wide consultation with stakeholders before submitting the PCP review.

SESAR DM managing director Massimo Garbini said: “The SESAR DM will fulfil these tasks with a high level of competence and commitment, ensuring not only the full implementation of the revised PCP, but also paving the way for the second common project in order to facilitate further essential operational ATM improvements.”

In addition, EC has mandated SESAR JU to propose content for inclusion in a second common project (CP2), from among the solutions it has delivered to date.

So far, SESAR JU has delivered more than 60 solutions, some of which are already on course for Europe-wide implementation through the PCP.
