CBS Chicago reported that an unattended bag in the upper level of the terminal prompted the response from the Chicago police at about 9.30am. Police said the ticketing area and baggage claim at Terminal 1 were evacuated, while the upper and lower level inner roadways were partially closed. The airport transportation system to Terminal 1 was also suspended during the hour-long investigation.

Transportation security administration screeners, airline workers and passengers were evacuated. United Continental resumed checking some passengers at Terminal 2 where the carrier also has some gates.

After the reopening of the terminal, the carrier said that they did not expect any major effect on its operations but suggested minor delays.
