Nice Côte d’Azur Airport has used SITA’s beacon technology in order to offer personalised information to passengers through its new multi-functional app.

The airport launched the new app to coincide with the recent opening of its renovated Terminal 1 retail area.

The airport will open the commercial area of Terminal 2 this year after completion of renovation.

"Increasingly passengers are demanding more control over their airport experience."

By leveraging SITA’s beacons and Common Use Beacon Registry, the airport can offer passengers real-time, relevant information.

As beacons are installed throughout the terminal, passengers using Nice Côte d’Azur Airport’s app will receive retail information and other offers relevant to where they are located at the airport.

Passengers of the Airport Premier Club on using the app will be able to automatically earn points as they pass through the airport.

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport IT head Jean-Pierre Torres said: "Increasingly passengers are demanding more control over their airport experience.

"They want to personalise the services they receive from the airport to their own requirements or needs. SITA’s beacon technology allows us to deliver on this expectation and offer a highly tailored experience to our passengers, in particular our frequent flyers.

"Indeed this technology will facilitate access to Fast Track Security for Airport Premier Gold members, allowing them to use their frequent flyer card automatically."

SITA president for Europe Dave Bakker said: "Beacon technology unlocks a world of opportunity for airports. With a clear view of who the passengers using the app are and where they are in the airport, Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is able to offer a wide range of tailored services.

"The airport has recognised this potential and we will continue to work together with the airport team to leverage this technology to further enhance the overall passenger experience at Nice."

SITA’s beacon registry contains information on where beacons are deployed at an airport.

Accessed through the Beacon Registry API, it enables app developers to use the detection of a beacon to trigger the provision of contextual information such as boarding times or information on a linking flight.

The Beacon Registry API is one of the APIs offered by SITA, which include weather, baggage tracking and flight information.

Last October, Nice Côte d’Azur Airport opened the first part of the renovated Terminal 1 retail area.

Last month, Menzies, a global supplier of passenger, ramp and cargo handling services, had signed a five-year deal with SITA to deploy the latter’s ground handling management technology at close to 150 airports globally.
