As part of the modernisation project, the main runway will be completely resurfaced and new LED ground lighting systems will be installed.

The project will create 150 construction jobs, and is expected to be completed over the next 18 months.

"This is an essential investment in the future of Dublin Airport and in the future of the Irish economy."

Dublin Airport managing director Vincent Harrison said: “This is an essential investment in the future of Dublin Airport and in the future of the Irish economy.

“Our main runway has been the workhorse of Dublin Airport since 1989 and has allowed the airport to grow from five million passengers per year to a record 25 million passengers last year.

“More than four million aircraft have taken off or landed on our main runway during the past 27 years and it’s now in need of a substantial overhaul.”

Flights will be moved to the airport's secondary runway during the construction phase, which will take place at night.

In 2015, Dublin Airport witnessed around 198,000 landings and take-offs.

Last month, the airport announced its plan to build a new four-star hotel between its Terminal 2 (T2) and T2 multi-storey car park.
