The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), in order to improve the contributions of airports to the sustainable socio-economic development of urban areas.
As part of the new MoU, both the organisations aim to assist their member states to follow the UN’s Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

International Civil Aviation Organization secretary general Dr. Fang Liu said: “Well-managed, ICAO-compliant airports are crucial to global socio-economic development, providing essential links between the world’s markets and peoples.
“Supported by the transport corridors that link them, airport and urban development go hand-in-hand, and this partnership with UN-Habitat will help bring renewed focus to the role of modernised aviation infrastructure in ensuring the efficient movement of people and goods.”
Both ICAO and UN-Habitat have already begun their partnership under a joint pilot project, which includes five airports in Addis Ababa, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Nairobi.
With the partnership, the organisations intend to boost collaboration between civil aviation, land, planning and urban development authorities, as well as international organisations, airlines and aircraft manufacturers.
