The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has partnered with Airports Council International (ACI) to launch a new initiative to develop new concepts aimed at enhancing the on-ground transport experience.

The New Experience in Travel and Technologies (NEXTT) initiative comes at a time when there is growing need to optimise the use of emerging technologies, processes and design developments to address the projected increase in air travel by 2036.

Under the collaboration, IATA and ACI will work together to develop a common vision to improve transport experience, guide industry investments and enable governments to formulate better regulatory framework.

“Working with our airport partners, we will explore the important changes in technology and processes to enhance the customer experience.”

IATA director general and CEO Alexandre de Juniac said: “We will not be able to handle the growth or evolving customer expectations with our current processes, installations and ways of doing business.

“And accommodating growth with ever bigger airports will be increasingly difficult if not impossible. NEXTT will address these challenges.

“Working with our airport partners, we will explore the important changes in technology and processes to enhance the customer experience. And we will ask some fundamental questions about what really needs to happen at the airport and what can be done off-site.”

NEXTT will study the movement of passengers, cargo, baggage and aircraft through the entire journey, as well as focus on bringing changes in areas such as off-airport activities, advanced processing technology, and interactive decision-making.

It will evaluate the feasibility of getting on-site processes, including security processing, baggage check and drop-off done off-site to enhance the airport experience.

The initiative also intends to promote the use of data, predictive modelling and artificial intelligence to enable real-time decision-making in order to optimise operational efficiency and passenger experience.

In an attempt to improve security and safety, the collaboration expects to use advanced processing technologies such as tracking and identification technology, automation and robotics.
