GS Yuasa Lithium Power (GYLP) has entered into a long-term supply agreement to provide GS Yuasa Technology’s (GYT) lithium-ion cells for use in Boeing’s satellite applications.

Under the contract, GYLP will provide multiple configurations of space qualified lithium-ion cells to Boeing until 2020, with an option to extend the deal.

Boeing will use the lithium-ion cells in batteries to support its commercial and government programmes throughout multiple satellite platforms and power classes.

"This long-term agreement was awarded based on the industry-leading heritage, performance and reliability of our lithium-ion cells for spacecraft."

Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

GYT’s lithium-ion cells are currently being used on over 120 satellites with more than 2.3MWh of lithium-ion energy storage in orbit.

Established in 2004 by the merger of Japan Storage Battery and Yuasa Battery, GS Yuasa estimated last December that its lithium-ion energy storage orbited would be increased by nearly twofold by the end of next year.
