Smiths Detection has installed four of its high-speed CTX 9800 DSi hold baggage explosives detection systems (EDS) to screen all passenger-checked luggage at Cochin International Airport in Kerala, India.

The CTX 9800 DSi detection systems have been deployed at the newly inaugurated international Terminal 3 of the Cochin Airport, making it the first Indian airport to screen all checked baggage, referred to as Level 1 screening, with computed tomography (CT)-based EDS.

Smiths Detection India director Pravin Surana said: “Congratulations to Cochin International Airport on the inauguration of Terminal 3 and being the first airport in India to screen all checked baggage with leading-edge CT technology.

"Cochin’s goal is to offer our passengers and airlines a world-class airport experience."

“As airports in India and throughout the region continue to upgrade explosives detection capabilities, Smiths Detection’s customised EDS solutions and services are ready to meet the unique challenges and growth plan of any airport.”

CT EDS are said to generate high-resolution 3D images that ensure efficient and precise baggage explosive detections, as well as reduce false alarm rates and the need for manual inspections.

Cochin International airport director A.C.K. Nair said: “Cochin’s goal is to offer our passengers and airlines a world-class airport experience.
