Under the collaboration, the companies will identify biofuel sources and supporting technologies for producing sustainable jet fuel in Hawaii.

Both companies are searching for various crops including locally growing sorghum and eucalyptus as potential sources to produce jet fuel.

For the project, the energy crops will be grown on empty land on Hawaii’s Kauai island.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice-president of environment and aviation policy Billy Glover said that Hawaii can play a meaningful role in helping aviation reduce carbon emissions, while increasing regional energy resources.
