UK-based technology start-up Altitude Angel has developed a global airspace monitoring system, Airspace Alerts, which could help drone operators fly more safely and responsibly.

The newly developed software enables drone operators to specify alert regions that the company’s cloud platform monitors in real-time for low-flying manned aircraft, sending a push notification through email or SMS to the drone operator to warrant that they have time to move out of the way safely.

Equipped with a free drone safety map, Airspace Alerts also expects to send out vital weather information and alerts whenever no-fly zones are activated or deactivated.

It monitors aviation traffic across the globe in real-time, combining around 12 million messages every minute from multiple sources.

After receiving the data will be filtered to provide updates on low-altitude, which is below 800m and air traffic that drone users need to be aware of.

The company, that includes former Microsoft cloud services developers and consultants, has spent more than six months testing the new software, as well as working with regulators, manufacturers and user groups across the US and Europe.

Altitude Angel founder and CEO Richard Parker said: "Drone pilots everywhere are crying out for better information.

"The majority of people want to ‘do the right thing’ and check for no-fly zones, obstacles and relevant regulations before they fly, but many don’t have the training, time or even access to everything they’d need in order to make better safety choices.

"It’s the industry’s job to help solve this problem."

The company noted that under existing legislation, drone operators and enthusiasts are personally responsible for ensuring safe operation of their drones and complying with several other regulations, which are usually too complex for general drone pilots to understand.

Altitude Angel is also focusing on empowering their human operators to access new, relevant safety data and useful monitoring to reduce the risk of a serious incident.
