UAE’s Abu Dhabi Airports has completed the final de-propping of the last arch on the roof of the new Midfield Terminal Building (MTB) at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH), making the structure completely self-supporting.
Completed in three days, the de-propping used 90 jacking points around the building to provide support to the structure while work was underway.
The construction of the last stage released 8,000t of weight onto the roof, bringing the total weight to 21,000t.
Abu Dhabi Airports chief programmes officer Sulaiman Al Siksek said: "Now that the complex process of de-propping the roof structure has been completed, the construction team has started clearing the 50 support towers under the roof, which will take them another four to five weeks.
"Meantime, the work can now start on the exterior enveloping of the front façade and on the preparation necessary for the interior work on the central processor."

By GlobalDataAlong with the existing terminals, the new MTB built at AUH will be able to handle the growing number of air passengers travelling through Abu Dhabi, which is expected to rise above 45 million within the next decade.
Being the largest architectural structure in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the MTB will be visible from more than 1.5km away.
The new terminal building’s roof is 319m at the widest point with 18 arches, with the largest 180m-wide and 52m-high.
Over the coming few months, Abu Dhabi Airports will begin construction of the standalone retails units in the duty free area of the building.
The new MTB is built between the two runways at AUH, facilitating the shortest possible journey from runway to parking stand for passengers.
