The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is set to upgrade existing airports in Lucknow and Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, as well as Deoghar in Jharkhand.

The AAI will also develop a new greenfield airport at Hirasar in the Rajkot district of Gujarat.

As part of the airport redevelopment projects, AAI intends to build a new integrated passenger terminal building at Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport at an estimated cost of Rs12.3bn ($191.46m).

Once operational, the new terminal will be able to handle a total of 6.35 million passengers each year and 4,000 travellers during its peak period.

In Allahabad, the authority proposes to build a new civil enclave, valued at approximately Rs1.26bn ($19.57m), to meet rising air travel demand in the city.

The new terminal is slated to be operational before January 2019.

Furthermore, upgrade works will be carried out at the Deoghar airport in Jharkhand to support operations of Airbus-320 and four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft C-130 types.

The work is expected to involve an estimated cost of Rs4bn ($62m) on a fixed cost basis and Rs4.27bn ($66m) on a completion cost basis.

In March, the Government of Jharkhand, DRDO and AAI signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

Under the terms of the MoU, the government will contribute Rs500m ($7.76m), DRDO will invest Rs2bn ($31m), and AAI will pay balance costs.

The new Hirasar airport will be constructed a on build, operate and maintain (BOM) basis to meet the increasing demand for air travel in the Saurashtra region.

AAI said in a statement: “Govt of Gujarat has provided the land free of cost and proposed the construction of the greenfield airport to meet the traffic potential of Saurashtra region, as indicated by its high level of economic growth.”
