Terminal One, which is currently under construction, will replace the outmoded Terminal A. It is scheduled to be become fully operational by 2022.

Meanwhile, the terminal operator will make short-term customer enhancements in Terminal A until that terminal is closed.

PNYNJ chairman Kevin O’Toole said: “We wanted to bring a world leader in customer service and concession management to Newark Liberty, and MAI fits the bill.

“New Jersey travellers deserve world-class service and the brand new Terminal One will improve the travel experience for Garden State residents and visitors while creating new jobs and business opportunities in the region.”

Terminal One at EWR will be 20% bigger than the existing Terminal A and will incorporate the latest digital technologies along with improved dining and retail options in about one million square feet of space.

Every year, the new terminal will accommodate approximately 13.6 million passengers on three levels. It will feature 33 common-use gates to manage bigger airplanes along with modern check-in, security, and baggage claim areas.

It is estimated that Terminal One will generate over $4.6bn in regional economic activity. It will also create over 23,000 job years and more than $1.9bn in wages.

The MAI, apart from the Newark project, is also involved with a joint venture (Reach Airports) that will manage the new Terminal One project at John F Kennedy International Airport.
