Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the US has unveiled the new extension worth $477.5m at Terminal 1.
The addition to this terminal, which was referred to as Terminal 1.5 at the time of construction, covers the first of seven Terminal Vertical Cores that will be opening at the airport.

In 2018, construction works on the Terminal 1.5 project started with Hensel Phelps serving as the general contractor and PGAL as the architect.
The new elevators and escalators in the Terminal 1 core will now offer a connection to a pedestrian bridge that will link to the upcoming Automated People Mover’s Center Central Terminal Area station.
The ticketing lobby at the terminal has been equipped with self-service check-in kiosks featuring biometric and touch-free capabilities from Materna Intelligent Passenger Solutions (IPS).
As part of the 283,000ft² extension, the building now has a six-lane Transportation Security Administration checkpoint on the concourse level, two new baggage carousels and additional ticket counters.

By GlobalDataAfter the completion of the terminal connector, the extended part of Terminal 1 will be connected to Terminal 2.
This will give additional access point, enabling the travellers to walk through the terminals without getting screened for the second time.
Southwest Airlines currently has 13 gates in Terminal 1 and has obtained a third baggage carousel, as well as three extra ticket counters.
LAX stated that the extension to the terminal has obtained the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification from the US Green Building Council.
As part of the green building features, the building will make use of a new recycled water system that is being deployed at the airport site.
A stormwater collection and management system has also been installed for collecting rainwater runoff.
The airport has deployed a lighting control system that can change the lighting inside the building as per the requirement.
For the regulation of temperature, humidity and air quality, new air handlers have been introduced that use Merv14 filtration, bi-polar ionisation, and ultraviolet germicidal irradiation.
Last month, LAX unveiled the $1.73bn West Gates at its Tom Bradley International Terminal.
