The UK’s London Heathrow Airport has cut its charges for domestic flights by £15 in an effort to boost national travel.

The fee reduction is applicable for all flights to any UK destination. This will boost the airport’s existing domestic discount by 50%.

UK travellers are expected to save approximately £40m each year and more than £750m over the next 20 years.

Heathrow said that the further reduction in the passenger charge will make domestic routes commercially viable for airlines, which will encourage carriers to add more domestic services from the airport.

London Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said: “Every corner of our country should be able to benefit from the growth and trade that stems from links to the nation’s hub airport. That’s why Heathrow is making it cheaper to fly within the UK by reducing our domestic passenger charges even further for the second consecutive year.

“UK travellers are expected to save approximately £40m each year and more than £750m over the next 20 years.”

“Putting nearly £40m back into the pockets of British families and businesses each year will help to spur growth in every part of the UK.”

Heathrow noted that the new discount is one of a number of measures implemented by the airport to support more domestic flights.

The airport plans to increase domestic connections from the existing eight to at least 14 for the 2025 expansion.

A £10m fund to provide start-up capital for five new domestic routes has been planned, along with a campaign to abolish air passenger duty on domestic flights. This could save up to £225m each year for UK passengers.

Plans also include requesting the government to use new powers post-Brexit to assign domestic airport slots.
