Liberty Defense Holdings has secured a letter of intent (LoI) from the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) in Canada to purchase its HEXWAVE technology for use in airport security initiatives.

GTAA intends to install the HEXWAVE walkthrough security detection portal to screen for potential threats at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Commenting on the move, GTAA Corporate Safety and Security director Dwayne MacIntosh said: “As the first airport in the world to test HEXWAVE, we see the potential benefits of utilising this innovative solution as part of our broader airport security programme following further testing and evaluation.

“We were impressed with the HEXWAVE’s seamless screening during beta testing and look forward to working with Liberty Defense on the enhanced detection the HEXWAVE would bring to the airport.”

Using artificial intelligence (AI), millimetre waves, and advanced 3D imaging, the HEXWAVE solution is said to identify hidden metallic and non-metallic weapons, along with other restricted items.

According to the vendor, the system is designed to support quick, automated screening through a ‘high throughput’ and a contactless walkthrough portal.

Liberty Defense CEO Bill Frain said: “As airports continue to look at innovative ways to enhance security, technology like HEXWAVE provides a flexible solution that can be quickly deployed and moved to areas inside and outside the airport.

“We are thrilled that the GTAA will be continuing to work with Liberty Defense to bring the HEXWAVE to the Toronto Pearson airport.”

If the deal materialises, Toronto Pearson will become the world’s first airport to acquire the HEXWAVE portal.
