German airport operator Fraport, alongside its Greek partners, has been awarded the concession to operate Kalamata Airport in Greece.

The consortium, which includes Delta Airport Investments and Pileas Holdings, secured the deal with a bid of €45.2m ($47.4m).

The agreement encompasses the management of the terminal, retail, and parking facilities, with operations anticipated to commence in late 2025. It could run for as long as 40 years.

The concession agreement obligates the consortium to invest €28.3m ($29.7m) in the first three years to modernise and expand the airport’s terminal infrastructure.

The Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations, also known as Growthfund, stands to gain from the concession through additional dividends.

Growthfund will retain a 10% stake in the operating company, with total revenues from concession fees and dividends expected to reach €71.2m ($74.8m) over the 40-year period.

Fraport CEO Dr Stefan Schule said: “We are delighted to add Kalamata Airport to our Greek portfolio. Together with our partners, we are going to further develop the airport and realise its full potential over the coming decades.”

In 2024, approximately 330,000 passengers are expected to travel through this airport located in the southern Peloponnese.

Since 2017, Fraport has been managing 14 regional airports.

Last year, Fraport announced its plans to reduce carbon emissions at its home base, Frankfurt Airport, to 50,000 tonnes by 2030. This target is 25,000 tonnes lower than its previous goal.

Fraport also initiated trials of autonomous baggage and cargo tractor at the Frankfurt Airport to verify if the autonomous vehicle can be used to support regular baggage and cargo operations on the apron.
