Finland’s Kittilä Airport has completed its renovation work, which has been carried out with the investment of Finnish airport operator Finavia.

Finavia made an investment of €60m for the development of airports in Lapland, out of which around €20m was allocated for the renovation of Kittilä Airport.

The renovation project focused on areas such as luggage handling, check-in and security control.

Finavia airport network senior vice-president Jani Jolkkonen said: “The attractions of Lapland offer competitive advantage to Finnish tourism. We believe that these investments will be necessary as soon as the Covid-19 pandemic is under control. The renewed Kittilä Airport offers premium passenger comfort and smooth travelling. As soon as travel bounces back after the pandemic, we are ready.”

As part of the makeover, the number of check-in counters has been increased from eight to 14.

The airport has installed new technical solutions in the form of ticket inspection machines and passenger scanners for smoother security control.

To improve baggage handling, a more efficient baggage sorting system and scanner have also been deployed at the airport.

The baggage handling area at the terminal was also expanded by 750 square metres.

Moreover, the recent improvement at the airport will expedite the loading of outbound baggage, including cumbersome skiing equipment and pushchairs, which are often seen being carried by travellers to the snowy regions of the Laplands.

Earlier, in 2018-2019, the airport was comprehensively renovated, with Finavia constructing new taxiways, around 2,000m² of passenger space and more aircraft stands.

The airport operator also installed water supply points, improved the signs and schedule displays and introduced a children’s playroom.

After the renovation, two new restaurants opened at Kittilä Airport.

In 2018, Finavia introduced a €55m development programme at Kittilä, Rovaniemi and Ivalo airports.

During the 2018-2019 renovation, new services and airport extensions were executed in stages.

Jolkkonen added: “In recent years, Finavia has invested more than €100m in the development of tourism in Lapland. We are proud of the renewals completed at Lapland airports. They improve our competitiveness, promote tourism in Lapland and make Finland more accessible.”
