FedEx Express, a subsidiary of the US delivery giant, has opened a new cargo hub at Dubai World Central Airport (DWC) in southern Dubai.

The 57,000m² facility comes with automated sorting systems that help with the processing and distribution of packages, as well as two automated, high-speed X-ray machines.

FedEx’s new facility in Dubai will act as a regional hub for FedEx in the MEISA region and is part of the company’s $350m plan to invest in infrastructure and technological advancements.

Richard W Smith, president and CEO at FedEx Express, said: “The establishment of our new regional hub significantly enhances our presence and capabilities in the MEISA region.

“This investment is not just about infrastructure expansion,” he continued. “It will contribute to improving the region’s connectivity and play a key role in facilitating global trade and commerce.”

Opened in 2010, DWC is Dubai’s second airport, located 37km south-west of the city. The airport initially acted as a cargo hub before opening its doors for passenger flights in October 2013.

Local authorities are looking to expand the airport’s capacity, with plans to build more runways and passenger terminals. Once completed, DWC is expected to become the world’s largest global airport by passenger traffic, with more than 160 million crossing its gates each year.

Speaking about FedEx’s latest hub announcement, Kami Viswanathan, president, MEISA region, for FedEx, added: “This hub is a significant step forward towards our vision of building smarter and more sustainable supply chains for everyone.”
