Spanish air navigation service provider (ANSP) Enaire has signed a cooperation agreement with UK ANSP NATS to identify areas for improvement to upgrade air traffic management at Barcelona-El Prat Airport.
Under the terms of the deal, Enaire will use NATS’ expertise in operating environments with high traffic density as that of the Spanish airport.
This will help modernise the airport procedures for controlling air traffic and designing routes.
In addition, NATS’ expertise will help enhance the general efficiency of operations in the airspace around Barcelona-the Prat Airport, particularly in the approach area where aircraft land and take-off.
Within the partnership framework, the two organisations will adopt several initiatives to enable upgraded management of air traffic at Barcelona-El Prat Airport.
These include analysis on maximising the use of the existing infrastructure and optimisation of the procedures with an aim to reduce the time difference between arriving and departing traffic.
The collaboration will also provide advice on the implementation of new systems that will help maximise the efficiency of runway use such as the implementation of time-based separation techniques and use of flight data via the data link provided by Mode S radars.
The initiatives also include the detailed analysis on procedures of unsuccessful approaches and standard departures to reduce the distance between different traffic, and improvement of the procedures and tasks of air traffic controllers in charge of approaches in conditions of visual separation or slipstream turbulence.
