Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport is to implement a new set of rules at all five terminals in September this year that prevents drivers who are picking up and dropping off passengers from parking on the curb.

The new rules are part of a comprehensive programme that has been designed to improve the flow of traffic and decrease overall congestion. They are also expected to enhance safety and security for travellers, employees and business partners.

DFW Airport CEO Sean Donohue said: “There are more vehicles than ever at the airport, and we want to keep traffic moving while providing safer access to our terminals.

“These necessary changes will improve the overall customer experience as it relates to traffic flow, efficiencies and ease of navigation.”

The airport has added approximately 1,200 one-hour parking spaces and will urge users to use the terminal parking garages without paying any additional charges for picking up or dropping off passengers.

New signs will be posted at the terminal curbsides this month to raise awareness of the rule changes. Signs will designate the areas for active loading and unloading.

Customers will also be informed about the change by the DFW Department of Public Safety and Parking teams throughout this month and next month. They will direct parked or standing vehicles to nearby terminal garages with one-hour and two-hour parking zones.

DFW believes that the new rules will reduce the number of vehicles on the upper level and bring the airport in line with others that have not allowed curbside parking since 2001.

Upon implementation of active loading and unloading zones next year, the airport will transfer some transportation services to upper and lower concourses, based on customer demand.

Last month DFW Airport took steps to reduce its carbon footprint by exploring renewable jet fuel.
