Each week, Airport Technology’s editor selects a deal that illustrates the themes driving change in our sector. The deal may not always be the largest in value, or the highest profile. But we select it because of what it tells us about where the leading companies are focusing their efforts, and why.

This new, thematic deal coverage is driven by our underlying Disruptor data which tracks all major deals, patents, company filings, hiring patterns and social media buzz across our sectors.

Deal of the week

eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) vehicle developer Talyn has been acquired by hybrid propulsion company Ampaire.

This deal shows the hunger for new solutions in the aviation space and how companies using more traditional technology are interacting with the disrupting forces that hope to change the sector – often with the environment as its driving motivation.

This acquisition could reflect the next stage in eVTOL development, as manufacturers and designers work not only towards take-off of eVTOL-specific aircraft but work with hybrid technology stakeholders towards the aviation transition.

Ampaire CEO Kevin Noertker said: “We see a near-term opportunity to apply hybridisation to that airframe to demonstrate the viability of hybrid electric in many broader applications.”

Talyn co-founder and CEO Jamie Gull and CTO Evan Mucasey will continue as advisors to Ampaire following the completion of the deal.

Both companies are based in the greater Los Angeles area in California, US. The financial details of the transaction were not made public.
