ACI awards carbon accreditation to King Khalid Airport

The accreditation was provided to the airport based on its environmental protection and carbon management strategy.

King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has received Airport Carbon Accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI).

Riyadh Airports Company (RAC), which manages and operates KKIA, stated that the accreditation was provided by the ACI due to airports environmental protection and carbon management measures.

Commenting on the development, Riyadh Airports Company CEO Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Maghlouth said: “We are keen at RAC to adopt and apply the best international standards that protect and preserve the environment.

“Obtaining this certificate proves the airport’s commitment to confront climate change and reduce carbon emissions. These international specialised certificates will contribute to raising the airport’s classification worldwide.

“This achievement reflects the continuous support that Riyadh Airports Company and KKIA receive from the General Authority of the Saudi Civil Aviation and Matarat Holding Company in all fields.”

RAC said that the accreditation also underlines its commitment to address the climate change challenges as well as minimise carbon emissions that supports Saudi Arabia’s goals for carbon neutrality by 2060, as well as sustainable development.

Al-Maghlouth further added: “We will move forward with our environmental initiatives in compliance with the best international aviation standards and we will complete the carbon emissions management accreditation program, which includes mapping, reduction, optimisation and transformation until achieving neutrality.”

Last June, RAC partnered with ADB Safegate to launch a new airport management platform at KKIA for managing operations with data-driven decisions.
