Airport operator Finavia is set to open the newly constructed south wing passenger terminal at Finland’s Helsinki Airport this summer.

The south wing is the first part of Helsinki Airport’s larger development programme, worth €900m, which will expand the airport and increase its capacity to serve 20 million annual passengers in 2020.

Prior to the official opening, a role play inspired event at the airport will be held that will see 200 volunteers being invited by Finavia to test and assess the new Helsinki Airport terminal facilities.

Slated on 6 July, a deployment test will be arranged to test the capabilities of the terminal processes and amenities at the south wing before they become operational.

During the test, Finavia will strictly scrutinise the visibility of signs, passenger experience and services provided by the technological solutions at the airport.

Finavia Helsinki Airport director Ville Haapasaari said: “We will test how well the test passengers find their way to the departure gate and how wheelchair passengers can move around at the airport.

"The feedback we will receive from the test passengers is valuable because we can then take passengers' wishes and needs into consideration in finishing off the south wing."

“We will also check practical things, such as the operation of doors and moving walkways and the smoothness of boarding processes.
