Singapore’s Changi Airport plans to restart operations in its Terminal 2 (T2), in a phased manner, from 29 May to cope with projected growth in passenger volume.

Baggage claim belts, contact gates and arrival immigration are among the major touchpoints at the terminal’s southern wing that will become ready for flight operations in the initial reopening stage.

T2 will primarily cater to peak-hour arrival flights of carriers that operate in Terminal 3 (T3), noted Changi Airport Group (CAG).

Some T3 departure flights will be able to use boarding gates at T2, however, procedures for check-in and clearing departure immigration for travellers on these flights will continue at T3.

Since May 2020, T2 has been shuttered, as air travel was hit by curbs induced by the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, it has been going through overhaul and expansion works, which are expected to be completed by 2024.

Following this expansion, the terminal will have a larger arrival immigration hall, including more automated immigration lanes.

The expanded terminal will also have special assistance lanes, which will be wider than conventional lanes. These special lanes will serve large family groups and travellers with mobility aids.

Furthermore, the baggage claim hall will feature three collection belts. One of these will have an increased length to manage more bags.

T2’s annual passenger handling capacity will be increased by five million after the expansion, up to a total of 28 million.

CAG executive vice-president of Airport Management Tan Lye Teck stated: “The start of flight operations at T2 will provide more capacity to support our airline partners, who are also gearing up to serve more passengers in the months ahead.

“T2 will reopen in phases over the next two years to support Changi’s recovery as a regional air hub.”

Last week, Changi Airport announced that work on its Terminal 5 (T5) project would resume after a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic.

Planned to be ready by the mid-2030s, T5 is expected to manage 50 million passengers a year.
