Norse Atlantic Airways, a Norway-based airline company, has received approval from the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) to operate flights between the US and the EU.

With this permit in place, the carrier intends to begin commercial operations later this year. The first flights will link Oslo in Norway to select cities in the US.

Norse Atlantic Airways founder and CEO Bjørn Tore Larsen said: “We are thrilled by the Department of Transportation’s approval of our affordable transatlantic flights.

“This significant milestone brings Norse one step closer to launching affordable and more environmentally friendly service to customers travelling between Europe and the US.

“We appreciate the USDOT’s constructive and prompt approach and we look forward to working with them in the months ahead.”

Norse Atlantic said that it will create new employment opportunities for US-based flight attendants and partner with local tourism organisations and businesses to spur economic growth across the US and Europe.

The airline also signed a pre-hire agreement with the US Association of Flight Attendants.  

Larsen said: “We are grateful for the support from community and labour leaders who are enthusiastic about the service we will deliver. We believe that transatlantic travel will resume with full force once the pandemic is behind us.

“People will want to explore new destinations, visit friends and family and travel for business. Norse will be there to offer attractive and affordable flights on our more environmentally friendly Boeing 787 Dreamliners to both the leisure and cost-conscious business traveller.”

Last December, the carrier obtained air operator’s certificate from the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority.
