Mongolia’s New Ulaanbaatar International Airport (NUBIA), also known as Chinggis Khaan International Airport, has officially commenced operations.

To mark the airport’s opening, an Ulan Bator-Tokyo flight managed by the Mongolian national carrier MIAT took off on 4 July 2021.

Narita International Airport (NAA), Mitsubishi Corporation (MC), Japan Airport Terminal (JAT) and JALUX are part of a joint venture (JV), which was formed in 2019 with the Mongolian Government to operate the new airport.

As per the concession agreement, NUBIA LLC will be responsible for the airport’s operations for the next 15 years.

Initially, the new airport was slated to begin operations last year, but the opening was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The airport is expected to serve as the main airport, replacing Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport (ULN) that served 1.61 million passengers in 2019.

After the transfer of all assets from the Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport, the new airport has been made ready for passenger traffic and flight operations.

The airport features around 30 buildings, including a three-storey passenger terminal, an air traffic control (ATC) tower, an operations building and a 3,600m-long concrete runway.

It also consists of a 3,339m-long and 23m-wide parallel taxiway, two rapid taxiways, as well as three exit taxiways.

In a joint statement, the partners said: “In operating the new airport, NUBIA will be taking advantage of the combined expertise of its four shareholders. MC boasts a strong track record in airports and other infrastructure projects in Japan and around the world, while NAA and JAT operate Narita International Airport and the passenger terminal buildings at Haneda Airport (HND), respectively.”

Meanwhile, JALUX will manage the airport’s retail businesses.

Currently, NUBIA is planning to expand the number of routes and flights servicing Ulaanbaatar in the coming years.

It will also focus on strengthening the new airport’s services and profitability, along with the development of in-terminal commercial facilities.
