This is part of the airport’s master plan that outlines an investment of £500m to transform the terminal and customer experience.

The plan highlights the way that Birmingham Airport will develop its site to cater to the rise in passenger numbers up to 2033.

Both organisations plan to obtain government backing for the £3.5bn Midlands Engine Rail plan, which includes the Birmingham Airport connectivity project.

The project aims to provide direct links between Birmingham International Station and Derby, Sheffield, Doncaster and York. It will also double rail services to Leamington, Banbury, Oxford and Reading from Birmingham International.

In addition, the collaboration will boost the neighbouring road network such as the A45 and A46, which are major road routes for accessing the national gateway.

Birmingham Airport CEO Nick Barton said: “It’s fantastic to sign this agreement with Midlands Connect, underpinning our strong, strategic relationship, as well as a joint commitment to improving the passenger experience for those travelling from and to Birmingham Airport.

“It’s vital that we continue to work together and that Midlands Connect’s priorities, as well as HS2, get a vote of confidence from the new government. We need investment in our roads and railways to keep pace with passenger growth, fulfill our masterplan ambitions and build a transport network fit for the future.”
