Air Traffic Control the Netherlands has launched the Runway Incursion Alerting System Schiphol, which will help prevent aircraft collisions and improve ground safety.

The system, developed in collaboration with the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR, is based on the current ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology and will be used at Schiphol Airport.

The system warns air traffic controllers of any imminent danger involving the unauthorised presence of an aircraft or vehicle on a runway.

The GPR technology locates and identifies any aircraft and vehicles on the ground that are equipped with transponders through a verbal alert, according to airtrafficmanagement.net.
