The project aims to cut the taxiway time and reduce fuel consumption by approximately 30% during take-off and landing.

Mail Today reported a source familiar with the matter as saying: "This project will have first elevated taxiway for aircraft to connect main runway with Terminal 1D aircraft parking area.

"This taxiway will intersect two roads, Central Spine and road coming from Gurgaon, for which two tunnels will be built to ease traffic flow.

"Visitors coming to Delhi airport will simultaneously see an aircraft moving above and normal traffic moving beneath."

The new taxiway is expected to be 2km in length and will start from Runway 11/29 and will move towards Centaur Hotel, from where it is expected to be connected to Runway 10/28 via the automatic sorting centre of the Indian postal service.

The source also said that plans for a petrol pump that was coming in the way of eastern cross taxiway was shelved to accommodate the taxiway.

According to reports, the new elevated taxiway will connect Delhi airport’s main runway to Terminal 1D, which receives more than 50% aircraft traffic due to domestic flights.

The publication reported an official as saying: "Meeting the new deadline for this project will be a big challenge as many deadlines have already been crossed.

"It will be impractical for DIAL to build this taxiway in the deadline which is 2016. But on the other side, DIAL has also built T3 in a record time that was internationally acclaimed."
