Astrium will develop a new satellite, the SES-6, for the SES World Skies communications network to be launched in 2013.

SES-6 will be placed in-orbit at 319.5°E to augment core SES video while allowing NSS-806, the satellite currently at that location, to be relocated for other missions.

The satellite will provide 50% more C-band capacity and be capable of distributing content between the Americas and Europe on the same high-powered beam.

It will offer a substantial upgrade to Ku-Band capacity in the region with high power beams over both North and South America, according to SES.

The satellite will also be able to support mobile maritime and aeronautical services on high-demand routes from North America, the Gulf of Mexico and across the north Atlantic.

Based on Astrium’s Eurostar E3000 platform, the 6,000kg satellite is expected to have design life of 15 years.
