Switzerland-based Pilatus Aircraft has selected Esterline CMC Electronics (CMC) of Canada to provide advanced avionics for its fleet of PC-21 turboprop training aircraft.

The aircraft has been selected by two undisclosed foreign customers.

Under the deal, CMC will supply its CMA-9000 flight management system (FMS), SparrowHawk head-up display (HUD) sub-system, and up front control panel for the aircraft fleet.

Belonging to a family of compact FMS versions, the CMA-9000 system can be used for digital cockpits in fixed and rotary-wing aircraft for both civil and military purposes.

More than 60 airlines and military operators are using the CMA-9000 FMS systems worldwide.

Offering a 25° total field of view to the pilot, the sub-system comprises Esterline CMC’s SparrowHawk HUD integrated with a HUD symbol generator and a video display unit.

Previously, Pilatus received CMA-9000 FMS and SparrowHawk HUD systems from CMC to serve as a standard fit on the fleet of PC-21 for all the existing aircraft fleet operators.

The PC-21 trainer aircraft has been designed to meet the needs for basic, advanced and fighter lead-in training for pilots and also for weapon systems officers (WSO) if required.

Powered by Pratt & Whitney’s 1600shp PT6A-68B engine, the PC-21 features digital power management system and automatic yaw compensation that makes it easy to fly at a low speed.

It is capable of holding low-level speeds of up to 598kmph and has a maximum range of 1,333km.
