Etihad Airways has placed a $26.7bn order for 56 Boeing widebody jets with options and purchase rights for further 26 aircraft at the 2013 Dubai Airshow.

The new order comprises 25 777Xs, including 17 777-9Xs and eight 777-8Xs, subject to programme launch, making Eithad the first airline to order the 777-8X, which is expected to enter service around the end of this decade.

The latest order also includes options and purchase rights for 12 additional 777X aeroplanes.

In addition to 777x aircraft, the carrier placed order for 30 787-10 jets, the new member of the 787 Dreamliner family, including options and purchase rights for an additional 12 787-10s.

The announcement also marks the 1,000th order for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner family since its launch in 2004.

In addition to the commercial aircraft, Etihad’s Boeing order comprises one additional 777 Freighter for its cargo fleet, with options for two 777 Freighters.

Etihad Airways president and CEO James Hogan said Boeing has been a long-term strategic partner for the airline throughout the journey, playing an integral role in its growth.

"I am delighted we are extending our relationship, bringing industry-leading aircraft into our modern fleet," Hogan said.

Meanwhile, on the opening day of the Dubai AirShow, Boeing and flydubai also announced a commitment for nearly 100 737 MAX 8 aeroplanes and 11 Next-Generation 737-800s.

The order, valued at $11.4bn at list prices, marks the largest ever Boeing single-aisle airplane purchase in the Middle East.
