As part of the project, six additional gates will be installed at Concourse A to bring the airport’s total gate count to 28. The six-gate expansion of Concourse A is set to provide space for future airline growth.

The project will create 60,000ft² of space for airline operations, retail and restaurant locations, customer hold rooms, and office space for tenants in addition to new public restrooms.

“The Commission intends to make critical infrastructure available ahead of demand so that Richmond International Airport can continue to meet growing needs of Virginia’s Capital Region.”

Funded by passenger facility charges (PFCs) and local (Commission) funds, the project is expected to be complete in 15 months by March 2020.

The Capital Region Airport Commission is expected to issue a notice to proceed in mid-November, with Phase I civil construction (utilities) underway shortly thereafter.

Capital Region Airport Commission chairman Aubrey Stanley said: “The Concourse A Extension project award is timely as the airport has seen a consistent increase in flights and passenger traffic since 2013.

“While we can clearly meet immediate needs, the Commission intends to make critical infrastructure available ahead of demand so that Richmond International Airport can continue to meet growing needs of Virginia’s Capital Region.”

The airport reported a 13.6% increase in traffic last month compared with the same month last year.

RIC is serviced by seven major airlines, Allegiant, American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, and United, which provide direct flights to major domestic destinations across the globe.
