Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Vietnam has fixed its first rooftop solar power system, which has an installed capacity of 1.1MWp.

This renewable energy project is the biggest project in downtown Ho Chi Minh City and the first such project to be installed in the country’s airport network, reports ScandAsia.

The project, covering a total area of more than 7,500m², is controlled by Saigon Cargo Service Corporation (SCSC) while Copper Mountain Energy JSC (CME) was responsible for investment and installation.

The project meets the quality standards imperative for accreditation by AFRY, a Swedish-Finnish engineering, consulting and design firm.

An AFRY representative has said that all technical requirements and quality control specifications were looked into during the construction of the project.

He added that aviation security and safety, without any negative effect on air transport, were also prioritised.

During phase one, the system is expected to supply nearly 1.5 million kwh of electricity yearly, enough to satisfy 40% of SCSC’s electricity demand.

It will also decrease the energy costs by about 15% while reducing emissions by around 1.5 tonnes of CO2.

To achieve 100% clean energy output, the project will be expanded in the second phase.

An SCSC representative informed that the unit requires about 3.7 million kwh of electricity every year and the new energy source will cut down operating costs and save the SCSC roughly $64,766 annually.

SCSC general director Nguyen Quoc Khanh said: “We aim to develop the SCSC into a model air cargo terminal in Vietnam and the region, utilising renewable energy and exploiting existing rooftop areas to save energy and protect the environment.”
