The expansion is expected to be completed and opened for passengers in December 2020.

Previously, the building was set to open in June but construction was halted due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Construction started in 2018 and the work will now focus on outfitting the building’s interior.

YVR will feature eight additional wide body gates, along with four jet bridge gates when open.

It will also feature four remote stand operation bus gates to enhance capacity at the terminal building.

Two of the new gates will also be able to handle aircraft that are as big as the Airbus A380.

In addition, the terminal expansion is expected to provide upgraded food and beverage and retail services.

The airport has also recommenced work for a new complex that features a six-storey parkade and a central utilities building. This structure is expected to be completed in 2022.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the timeline of the C$9.1bn ($6.84m) expansion at the airport is expected to face delays.

In 2018, YVR unveiled its revised 20-year expansion blueprint with a total investment of C$9.1bn to increase its infrastructure and help manage increased passenger growth.
