The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has selected Oakland International Airport (OAK) as an official Innovation Task Force Site.

The selection is said to enable the airport to develop new technologies to handle the growing number of passengers. This includes automated bin return, remote monitoring, and computerised topography (CT) technology to identify explosives in carry-on luggage.

The collaboration programme with Southwest Airlines is set to commence at Terminal 2 of OAK. Roll-out is expected to start within the next six months.

Port of Oakland aviation director Bryant Francis said: “OAK has had and continues to have great working relationships with our partners at TSA, both locally and in Washington, DC.

“OAK said that its participation as an Innovation Task Force Site will promote enhanced efficiency for passengers at security checkpoints.”

“Historically, selected Innovation Site airports have included the top 20 largest airports plus Chicago Midway, therefore, we see this as a welcome opportunity for OAK to deepen our collaboration with our partners at TSA and Southwest to further improve the travel experience for all of our customers.”

Airports established as TSA innovation sites must be able to update and install security systems.
