Mexico’s flag carrier AeroMexico has contracted Swiss aviation services provider Swissport to provide ground services at Rome Fiumicino Airport in Italy.

This service agreement will be valid until March 2026.

Under the contract, Swissport will offer passenger and security services, as well as lounge hospitality and ramp handling services to the airline, which plans to operate direct flights between Rome Fiumicino and Mexico City from 26 March.

Swissport Italia general manager Marina Bottelli said: “We are honoured and excited to partner with the Mexican national airline. AeroMexico can rely on Swissport’s recognised experience as a reliable partner for a vast range of aviation services between the landing and the take-off of their flights.

“Our launch in Italy just nine months ago, when we also took over the complete hub handling of ITA Airways at their home base, was a great success, and we are pleased that our customer portfolio continues to grow and now includes 50 renowned airlines.”

Initially, the Mexican airline will run four weekly flights, with plans to increase it to seven flights from the middle of June 2023.

Swissport started operations at Rome Fiumicino airport in July 2022 and later extended its reach to Milan Linate in October 2022.

The firm has since then catered to more than 4.8 million travellers and managed nearly 42,000 departures of 50 air carriers at Rome Fiumicino airport.

Earlier this month, Swissport secured a three-year contract from ITA Airways for ground services at Zurich and Geneva airports.
