Italy’s flag carrier ITA Airways has awarded a three-year contract to Swiss aviation services company Swissport to provide ground services at Zurich and Geneva airports.

From 31 March 2023, Swissport will provide passenger check-in and boarding services, as well as baggage and aircraft handling, which includes baggage transport baggage, aircraft loading and unloading, push-back, and de-icing works, at the two airports.

Under the contract, Swissport will handle ITA Airways’ A319, A320, A222/223 flights in Zurich and Embraer 75/90, A319 and A320 aircraft in Geneva.

ITA Airways currently operates around 700 flights annually from Zurich and more than 1,000 flights from Geneva to various destinations across Italy.

Swissport DACH, Italy and France senior vice-president and managing director Bruno Stefani said: “We are delighted to count ITA Airways along with its significant network among our new customers in Switzerland.

“This contract is an important addition to Swissport’s customer portfolio in Switzerland and a demonstration of the airline’s confidence in our services.

“From the very beginning, Swissport has shown in Italy its expertise in hub handling and its ability to quickly and reliably start and maintain smooth operations despite high passenger volumes.”

Last year, the Swiss firm took over the hub handling operations of ITA Airways at Rome-Fiumicino and Milan-Linate airports.

The latest contract further strengthens the ties between the two companies.

In January, Swissport added Kenya’s Moi International Airport to its network.

With this addition, Swissport has further expanded its footprint in the African region.
