Switzerland flag carrier Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has further downsized its flight operations in Geneva to an ‘absolute minimum’ level.

The temporary reduction is due to new government restrictions and a drop in air travel due to Covid-19 pandemic.

The announcement took effect on 1 February and will last until the end of the month. The decision will see the company operate only 10% of the February services it provided in 2019.

SWISS, which is part of Lufthansa Group, will continue its efforts to keep Western Switzerland connected with its Zurich-based network.

The company also noted that additional changes are being carried out to SWISS’s Zurich flight schedules.

Passengers whose flights have been cancelled can rebook tickets for free or avail refund.

The reduction will not affect the 13 weekly services between Geneva and SWISS’s Zurich hub and the seven weekly frequencies between Geneva and the Frankfurt hub of Lufthansa.

Additionally, many of the short and long-haul SWISS services from and to Zurich will continue to run.

WISS CEO Dieter Vranckx said: “Geneva is and remains an extremely important location for us.

“And as soon as conditions permit and the demand for air travel returns, we will steadily expand our services from Geneva again, as we will from Zurich, too.”
