Swedavia AB, the owner and operator of ten Swedish airports, has announced that its airport operations across Sweden have become fossil-free.

It will now provide support to other corporations and organisations at its airports for transforming operations.

According to the company’s annual and sustainability report 2020, Swedavia has become one of the first airport operators globally to implement fossil-free operations.

About ten years ago, the company’s combined airport operations produced about 8,000t of fossil carbon dioxide annually.

Swedavia president and CEO Jonas Abrahamsson said: “Swedavia wants to be a driving force in reducing climate impact. So I am incredibly proud that our own airport operations, some of the first in the world, are now free from fossil carbon dioxide emissions.

“This is a result of relentless work that has required a sense of purpose, investments, innovation and collaboration with partners to reach a goal that many had thought was not possible.”

Over the last few years, the company has taken several measures to cut down its carbon footprint in a systematic way.

Swedavia became climate-neutral in 2006 and in 2011 it decided to cut down its fossil emissions to zero by the end of 2020.

In January 2017, Ronneby Airport (RNB) became the first to attain this goal, followed by Visby Airport (VBY) and Luleå Airport (LLA) in 2018.

Among other measures, the company started using renewable heating in airport buildings and vehicles that operate on electricity or on renewable fuels such as biogas.

In addition, Swedavia held discussions with the suppliers about deploying creative solutions for the equipment the fossil-free alternatives were not available.

As of now, the company is working to use at least 5% renewable aviation fuel for refuelling at the airports it works with by 2025.

Swedavia provides funds for covering the additional cost for airlines that pick bio aviation fuel at its airport operations.
