The digital assets can be used to purchase flight tickets and other airport-related services.

The airport’s administration will partner with Venezuelan cryptocurrency watchdog National Superintendence of Crypto Assets and Related Activities (Sunacrip) to launch the payment options.

Maiquetia airport director Freddy Borges was quoted by the news agency as saying: “We must advance in these new economic and technological systems to be accessible.”

“We will activate a button for cryptocurrency payments in the airport platforms and commercial activities in coordination with Sunacrip.”

Borges noted that the debut of crypto payments at the airport would support the company’s goal to promote the adoption of digital currency.

The new crypto payment options are also expected to benefit foreign tourists.

In recent years, many airports and airlines globally have been exploring ways to introduce crypto payments, along with blockchain-based functionalities.

In March, Latvian airline airBaltic started allowing passengers to use Ether (ETH) and Dogecoin (DOGE) as payments for flight tickets.

It introduced bitcoin payments in 2014.
