Perth Airport (PER) in Australia has initiated a Passenger Screening Reform (CT Upgrade) project to modernise its passenger screening infrastructure across all terminals.
By deploying new security screening equipment, the airport will support the Federal Government directive that aims to strengthen Australia’s domestic and international aviation security.

This new equipment is expected to boost the efficiency of the screening procedure and detection levels at the airport.
As part of the upgrades, the airport will install new body scanners, walkthrough metal-detectors, x-ray machines, explosive trace detection systems and secondary viewing stations with explosives trace detectors at its terminals.
Perth Airport CEO Kevin Brown said: “The body scanner has been a part of the international screening requirements for a number of years and will be introduced into domestic travel screening lanes, but with updated technology.”
The new body scanners can spot metal and non-metal foreign matter within a millimetre of the skin in just under a second.

Additionally, CT scanners for all international and domestic carry-on luggage will be introduced.
As a result, the passengers will not be required to remove computers and aerosols from their bags for the screening procedure.
By utilising 3D technology, the new CT-x-ray machine will spot suspicious items in the passengers’ carry-on bags.
For this enhancement project, the airport carried out a comprehensive testing of several equipment.
Brown added: “We’ve worked hard to progress with the upgrades at T1 Domestic and International so they will be ready to go by the end of this month just in time for borders re-opening in February.
“However, we will be closing areas of the current screening points at T2, T3 and T4 this year, which may create congestion particularly around peak FIFO movement periods.”
The CT Upgrade project is projected to be concluded soon.
Last February, Perth Airport introduced a new airport operational capability for improving airline and ground handler flight management procedures.
