Italy’s Palermo Falcone Borsellino International Airport (PMO) has partnered with Swiss information technology firm SITA to test the latter’s emissions management capability.

Initially, the trial will continue for a period of four months.

SITA Emissions Manager, a new emission management solution, has been developed to manage Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions that ‘typically represent the largest source of emissions for most organisations.’

This new technology will utilise the SITA Airport Management solution, allowing the airport to oversee selected Scope 3 emissions.

The solution will combine several emission datasets to enable the airport to take initiatives aimed at minimising emissions and driving improved efficiency in apron operations.

During testing, the advantages of using SITA Emissions Manager will be evaluated to optimise additional Scope 3 emission sources at the airport.

Palermo Airport CEO Giovanni Scalia said: “The environment and the eco-sustainable development of the airport are for us two very important topics that we intend to pursue with a series of interventions.

“The keyword here is ‘sustainability’, and the target is the reduction of our carbon emissions and achieving net-zero by 2050 according to the resolution we signed at the 29th ACI EUROPE Annual Assembly and Congress in Cyprus. We are excited to be working with SITA to improve our emission data collection and enable us to make more informed and immediate optimisation decisions.”

Palermo Airport is working towards decarbonising its operations on the basis of ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Between 2018 and 2019, the airport turned to renewable energy for cutting down its carbon emissions from 0.71kg of carbon per passenger to 0.67kg.

Now, the airport intends to reach 0.60 kg of CO₂ per traveller by 2023.

Last month, Germany’s Frankfurt Airport (FRA) utilised SITA to deploy 87 biometric check-in kiosks.
