Material handling and logistics automation company Vanderlande has secured a new contract to incorporate a new baggage handling solution at Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands.

Lelystad Airport, which is a member of the Dutch airport operator Royal Schiphol Group, is set to undergo a phased redevelopment project to provide alternative capacity for non-Mainport Amsterdam-Schiphol related air traffic.

The upgrade project is scheduled to be completed by 2019.

Under the latest contract, the new system will be integrated with automated guided vehicle (AGV) technology that will help replace the use of conveyors and sorting systems for handling passenger luggage.

It will also feature a self-bag drop solution that will enable the airport to optimise the travel experience for passengers.

Vanderlande’s baggage handling technology will offer high levels of flexibility and scalability with the possibility of implementing additional vehicles.

This will help the system upgrade itself with the growing airport traffic without the need of any immediate building expansion.

The new solution has been designed to ensure shorter project lead times and uses up to 50% less energy compared to traditional baggage handling systems.

In addition, the system will enable the vehicles to be easily recycled, supporting a circular economy.

On 31 March 2015, Lelystad was granted a permission to develop into an airport that could accommodate 45,000 flights each year.
