United Airlines has sought approval from the US Department of Transportation (DoT), to begin trans-Pacific service to Xi’an, China, from the airline’s San Francisco hub.

Subject to government approval, the seasonal nonstop service will be operated three-times-weekly between 8 May and 27 October 2016.

Touted as the first trans-Pacific service to Xi’an, the service will be operated on Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

United Airlines vice chairman and chief revenue officer Jim Compton said: "We are excited by the prospect of adding the first trans-Pacific Xi’an service to United’s global route network. Assuming our application is approved, United customers will have unique nonstop flights to one of China’s most vibrant cities, with fast and easy connections to destinations throughout the Americas from our San Francisco hub."

On approval, the United Airlines would become the only airline operating Xi’an flights to/from the US and the first US carrier to serve Xi’an.

The proposed flights will depart San Francisco International Airport at 1:25pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and arrive in Xi’an at 5:30pm the following days.

The return flights will depart Xi’an’s Xianyang International Airport at 10:30am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and arrive at San Francisco International Airport at 7:35am the same days.

Flying times is estimated to be 13 hours, five minutes approximately.

According to United, it operates more nonstop US-China flights, and to more cities in China, than any other airline.
