The Ukrainian Government has reached a truce with pro-Russian separatists for a temporary ceasefire around Donetsk Airport.

A Ukrainian military statement said: "We have just learned that as a result of negotiations between the heads of the joint Russian-Ukrainian centre near Donetsk Airport, the fire has come to a halt."

The military press service informed on 1 December that officials from both the sides decided on a truce after holding talks near the airport.

"We have just learned that as a result of negotiations between the heads of the joint Russian-Ukrainian centre near Donetsk Airport, the fire has come to a halt."

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) was quoted as saying that the terms of the deal call for a ceasefire on the contact line to go into effect on 5 December and heavy weapons to be withdrawn on 6 December.

The airport in the eastern city of Donetsk is the only outpost of the government forces in the area.

A fierce battle has been raging between separatists and Russian forces despite a peace truce that was signed between the two nations on 5 September. The war has killed more than 4,000 people since April.

Continued shelling from both sides has led government forces and rebels to blame each other of violating the truce.

The situation in the country has worsened since 2 November after the rebels held leadership elections, which Kiev and the west said was a violation of the ceasefire deal.

The Ukrainian crisis has been carrying on since February after a series of violent events towards protesters in the capital of Kiev resulted into a fight and the impeachment of the then-President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych.

A firefight between government forces and separatists had led to the complete destruction of the country’s main international airport in October.

A mid-November report from the United Nations’ human rights office had stated that the battle has claimed the lives of nearly 1,000 since September.
