Thales Group has been appointed by the Egyptian National Air Navigation Services Company (NANSC) to replace and upgrade existing air traffic management (ATM) systems at Hurghada and Taba International airports.

As part of the deal, Thales will also install TopSky air traffic control (ATC), primary and secondary radar, and communication systems at the two Egyptian international airports.

NANSC vice chairman Hesham Abdel Azim said: "With its strategic location, Egypt’s airspace helps to bridge the continents of Africa, Europe and Asia.

"Partnering with Thales to modernise our ATM systems at Hurghada and Taba supports our mission to provide safe, orderly, expeditious and efficient air traffic management to this vital corridor."

The completion of the projects will ensure increased safety and improved efficiency at the two airports enabling them to meet the growing levels of air traffic.

As stated by Thales Group, NANSC has selected the French company at World ATM Congress 2016.

Thales vice-president in charge of ATM Business Jean Marc Alias said: "Working with NANSC on these projects at Hurghada and Taba International Airports is an extension of our decades-long commitment to continue to provide robust, scalable and proven solutions for their air traffic management needs."

For more than 35 years, Thales has been installing critical systems for NANSC across the country in a bid to modernise the Egyptian airspace.

In 2010, Thales and Egyptian company Orascom supplied an ATC system for a new tower at Cairo Airport.
