Terma has received a contract from air navigation manager AENA to upgrade its existing surface movement radar (SMR) at Madrid Barajas Airport in Spain. 

With the installation of the new radar, Madrid Barajas joins the list of airports that operate the next-generation solid state Scanter 5502 SMR.

Terma will deliver the radar, along with its Terma Extractor solution, through a collaboration with local company SEAIRTECH.

The SMR is said to enhance safety by enabling air traffic controllers to monitor, guide and instruct aircraft, vehicles and personnel on the ground at airports.

Terma claims that the radar covers a large area and operates in a range of climate and visibility conditions.

The Scanter 5502 solid state SMR is integrated with the airport’s advanced surface movement guidance and control system as the primary non-corporative surveillance sensor.

Besides Madrid Barajas, the Scanter 5502 solid state SMR is used by other major Spanish airports, including Bilbao, Ciudad Real, Tenerife and Santiago De Compostella.

Terma also noted that its SMR radars are used by more than 120 international airports worldwide.
