In total, eight  major Australian Airports, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Cairns and Darwin, are now equipped with the latest self-service biometric technology for border control.

"This project is simply the most remarkable SmartGate roll out ever at a global scale, with state-of-the-art biometric technology intensifying border security at all major exit points of the country."

Around 83 SmartGates have been installed at these airports.

Commenting on the completion of the SmartGate roll-out at airports, Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Peter Dutton said: “This milestone delivers on Australian Government’s commitment towards streamlined border control processes and enhanced border protection capability at our international airports.”

The self-service biometric touch points match the passport chip’s photo with a live photo, thereby ensuring that a passenger is the rightful holder of the passport.

The solution will allow legitimate travellers to cross the border easily so that the Australian Border Force officers can focus on risks at the border.

SmartGate's cameras automatically adjust to the passenger’s height, while patented document feeder technology positions the passport precisely on the reader at all times.

It returns the document to the passenger only when reading is fully completed, thereby eliminating any delays due to document misplacement.

Vision-Box CEO Miguel Leitmann said: “This project is simply the most remarkable SmartGate roll out ever at a global scale, with state-of-the-art biometric technology intensifying border security at all major exit points of the country.

"We are very proud to have worked cooperatively with the Australian Border Protection authorities in implementing this project of reference and providing the best tools for major international airports to boost their capacity and manage increasing traveler volumes.

"10 million passengers have been reliably identified. And that’s how this solution is working at the service of international security, efficiency and the convenience of people who travel.”
